The Butterfly Effect

The butterfly effect is a phenomenon that describes how small events can have large, unforeseen consequences. The term was coined by meteorologist Edward Lorenz, who observed that a small change in the initial conditions of a weather system could lead to drastically different weather patterns.  For example, the flapping of a butterfly's wings in Brazil could potentially set off a chain of events that leads to a tornado in Texas.
